If the sight of your girlfriend splashing around in a bikini gets you ‘standing to attention’, then you may be tempted to get adventurous in the water - whether you’re in a private hot tub or taking a dip in the sea. But how exactly do you turn your ‘wet dream’ into a reality? And how do you keep it safe? Unfortunately it isn’t as easy as just jumping in and going for it. Read on for tips on how to get wet and wild.

Safe Sex

It doesn’t take a genius to work out that condoms and water don’t go well together. Not only does the water make it difficult to put the condom on, but the chances of it falling off and floating away are relatively high! On top of that, condoms are not tested for strength against the wet, heat and chemicals (found in pools and hot tubs) – so there could be an increased risk of breakage.

If you want to have sex in water and need to use condoms, the following tips should help reduce the risk of slippage:
•    Put the condom on outside of the water – this obvious and simple step will help to keep water out of the condom and reduce it’s slipperiness.
•    Try to keep the penis fully erect during intercourse in water; if the penis goes even a little flaccid the water could seep in.
•    The motions of sex can encourage water to enter the condom, so keep your movements gentle and sensual.
•    Bring some back up condoms, because sometimes, even if you do everything right, the water can still find a way in!

Staying Slippery

Most people seem to think that sex in water will create extra lubrication – but that’s not the case. The water washes away the vagina’s natural lubrication as well as any water-based lubricants you use. A lack of lubrication will cause more friction and potentially discomfort for you and your partner (plus it’ll increase the chances of a condom breaking).

To avoid this, you can use a non-water-based lubricant to keep things slippery:
•    Oil-based lubricants, like Yes Oil-Based Lubricant, can be used in water but will destroy latex so should not be used with condoms.
•    Silicone-based lubricants, like Your LinkPjur Original Bodyglide, are condom safe and water-resistant. This type of lube doesn’t have a water component so won’t get washed away in the water; it will remain slick and silky feeling. It can however be a little tricky to remove and is more expensive than standard water-based lubes.

Where to have sex in water?

You don’t need to risk getting caught having sex out in the open - if you have a bath or a shower then you needn’t look any further than your own home to experiment with sex in water. You could try missionary positions in the bath or having standing up sex in the shower.

But if you are more adventurous, there are private pools, hot tubs, lakes, or the sea just waiting to be explored. Just be careful not to go out of your depth and remember that sex in public is illegal, so if you are going to indulge out in the open – keep it discreet and try not to get caught!

The Risks

Depending on where you are indulging; the thrusting motion of sex can force water containing salt, chlorine or bacteria into the vagina which can lead to irritation or infection. So if your partner is prone to infections or you just want to avoid the risk altogether, try to stay above the surface or consider water foreplay or oral sex instead; skinny-dip in a lake or get sensual in a bath then return to dry land and continue the fun.

I've tried it before and to be honest, much like joining the mile-high club, the inconvenience and awkwardness of the whole thing makes it not worth the trouble except in extreme (read: extremely horny and extremely impatient) circumstances in my opinion.

But if you do decide to go for it in a public place, and you wear a condom and it "falls off and floats away", please for the rest of humanity, FIND IT AND DISPOSE OF IT PROPERLY! Don't leave it out there for someone else to bump into.
