Get Frank got the opportunity to chat with John Campbell, Laphroaig Distillery Manager. Here is his some insight into his job at Laphroaig.

Tell us about your job, how would you describe your role?
My role is to be one of the guardians of Laphroaig, it goes from producing the spirit to being the figure head for the brand.
What does a usual day entail for you?
Usual days are not normal! They usually start at 7.30am and I take a wander around the site speaking to staff then get into emails, projects and legislation needs for the site. A lot of communication through all forms from Twitter to phone calls etc. Then I meet with the local team to progress site actions and a lot of organising, strategy and internal company priorities.
The day will normally finish at about 6.30pm when I walk 100 yards to get home and sit down, or not, with my family.
You are the youngest distiller to run the Laphroaig Distillery in its 190-year history, what do you think gave you the edge to achieve this?
Not sure I can answer that. I’m passionate about Laphroaig and what it stands for, and I’ve been here for 17 years so really get what it’s about.
Have you had any mentors along the way that have helped shape your career?
Lots within the industry, it’s really a big family and so it manages itself and me to ensure I reach the standards required.
What sets Islay Malt Whiskey and specifically Laphroaig apart from other whiskeys?
The people and the island. But I would say that I suppose!
Can you remember the first time you drank malt whiskey, and did you enjoy it?
When I started at the distillery. It took a bit of getting used to at first, but with Laphroaig it’s a very rewarding experience.
What’s your favourite way and play to enjoy a drop?
At home after a day at work and a dram of 10 year old.
And before you take off, this was your first trip to New Zealand, have you enjoyed it?
Loved New Zealand. It’s such a beautiful country and with World Cup on, it was really buzzing so hope to be back here with my family as they would love it.
