American film and television star John Krasinski is probably best known for his role as sardonic nice guy "Jim Halpert" on the American version of "The Office", for which he won a 2007 and 2008 Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series.
John's latest title includes It's Complicated as well as his continued role in The Office and up and coming romantic-comedy Something Borrowed. GetFrank got the chance to get some answers out of him.
How did you get involved in It’s Complicated?
I got a call saying there was this movie coming together with Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin, and I immediately said: “Yes!” And I hadn’t even found out that Steve Martin was going to be in it too!
Was the shoot fun?
It was a blast, and I was lucky to be part of a gang of actors that had a really good time too! I came into the movie with the expectation of working with three of the biggest actors ever; but then it turned out that they were the nicest people and also very funny, and we became friends.
What did you think of Nancy Meyers’ script when you read it?
I thought it was very well written, but so are all her movies. She has the amazing ability to write these incredibly funny scenes that also have an undercurrent of reality and situations that people can really empathize with.
The truth is that the situations and characters she portrays are very relatable; because to have a couple of characters like Jane and Jake that are divorced, but maybe thinking about getting back together again, is something a lot of people can understand. Nancy does a great job at setting the tone for a big movie with comedy that is filled with very complex characters. It’s the perfect situation for any actor.

Your character is about to marry Jane’s eldest daughter, but he is caught in the middle of everything.
He is! And it was easy to play nervous on this set because Harley was nervous and so was I. It’s fun to be in the middle of everything, being the only one that knows that Meryl and Alec’s characters are having an affair. I guess I am a bit like the audience, as I am in shock and in awe of what’s going on.
That scene where Harley finds out about this affair between Jane and Jake must have been fun to shoot.
Yes, and it was all thanks to Nancy because she wrote it perfectly. To go from having a beautiful lunch with my future wife and the wedding planner to seeing her divorced parents getting in an elevator together and kissing was such a blast to shoot because the energy was high and the stakes were believable.
What do you think raced through your character’s mind when he saw them?
I think Harley is trying to be as good of a man as possible to impress Jane, but then to observe her make these wild decisions and living her life the way she is kind of melts his brain. It gets him nervous to see them acting as kids, as those are the things he was probably brought up not to do.
Why do you believe he keeps this amazing discovery secret?
Because there are so many people at stake, and he isn’t even in the family yet! But more than anything I just think it’s important for him to keep everybody happy, and at that moment the best way to achieve that is probably by keeping his mouth shut.
It must be quite something to play against three names of that caliber…
With a cast like that I would have been happy to play the waiter that shows up for a minute, or any role. But to actually have a part with any impact whatsoever on the film is awesome.
What was it like to work with such an accomplished actress as Meryl Streep?
It has probably been one of the most surreal experiences of my career. It just doesn’t get any better, as everybody knows, because she is probably the best actress on the planet.
I admire everything about Meryl Streep! I admire her acting, how amazing she is in every single scene and how easy it seems to come to her; but I admire her even more as a person, because to be a true movie star and stay, takes a lot more than your resume. She is an amazing person.
Would the movie work if the love triangle between her and Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin didn’t work too.
That triangle happens in real life, because there is always the nice guy and then there is the captain of the football team. That’s a high school dynamic that I think goes on forever. The problem is when the guy who is not so nice is as confident, handsome, charming, and extremely funny as Alec Baldwin!
Do you relate more to Steve’s character then?
Maybe, because I was never the aggressive kind.
How is Alec Baldwin like to work with?
I think Alec is one of the funniest people I have ever seen. And there is no better person to work with on a comedic scene than him. He knows comedy and how to deliver a joke, and his performance is always spot-on!
What do you think Steve Martin brought to the role of Adam?
Steve did such a great job, because he could have played the straight man but he brought so many nuances to his performance.
Are relationships complicated, or do we complicate them more than we should?
I think we probably complicate them much more than they need to be; but I also believe that all relationships are complicated, as there is always that dance between how much you want to reveal about yourself and how much the other person is going to reveal to you. Really getting to know a person is hard to do, but the reward is great.
What would you say to people who think It's Complicated is a 'chick flick'?
That thanks to Nancy, because it is so well written, guys can relate to everyone and every laugh.
What do you like the most about the story?
I like that it’s kind of an odd love story and an exploration of the “what if?” between people.
