Fight Diary: Josh Borthwick (Advertising slob, fair weather sailor and general layabout)
Week 10 & 11
Weight – 79kg (Goal 78kg)
Height - 5”11 (180cm)
Waist – 33 inches (Goal 32 inches)
There’s just over a week to go before the fight and I’m feeling solid and ready. I’ve got a bit of a bruised rib from last night’s sparring session, but hopefully that won’t bug my final bits of training too much. I’m working on faster, sharper hands now to win the fight.
Most importantly – before I even step in the ring I’ve won. I’ve broken the elusive 80kg barrier and I’m positive I’ll get to my goal of 78kg by fight night. I’ve lost most of the fat I carried in to all of this and, while there’s still a little bit of a spare tire around my mid-section, Ush my wife can’t keep her hands off me! That’s got to be testament to all this training. I feel fitter than I’ve probably ever been and just last Sunday I completed the Round the Bays 8-minutes faster than when I ran it about 12years ago at just over 42 minutes! I’ve essentially achieved everything I wanted to before the fight and now I can focus on topping it all off with a win.
I still have plenty to work on with my sparring, but I’m more stable on my feet, I’ve already been hit harder than I think I’ve ever been before and carried through, and all the guys I’m fighting are substantially bigger than my final opponent. So things are stacking up well going into fight-night. This last week is about fitting in as many intense sparring sessions as I can handle and next week I’ll take the pedal off a little and work on maintaining everything into the fight.

This is the last of my entries before the fight, so the next installment you can look forward to will be the big night itself. I’ll get the full footage and put it up for better or worse (but hopefully for better).
