Award Nights - Pacific and Juice TV

It's been a full on and action-packed weekend for us at Get Frank. On Saturday night were the low-key and tasteful Pacific Music Awards, and Monday saw the annual Juice TV awards come around - and they were anything but low-key. Both events recognized a whole range of Kiwi artists and furthermore proved that we have a hell of a lot of talented folk here in NZ.

Three Houses Down dominated the event picking up two key awards: the coveted Tui for the S3 Best Pacific Music Album ‘Break Out' which also sees them honoured at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards in October - and the APRA Best Pacific Song Award for the single ‘Kanikapila.' Hailed as the new princess of R&B, soul diva Erakah receives the award for Pacific Blue Best Pacific Female Artist for her single ‘Wonderful' while J. Williams picks up the award for NZ Music Commission Best Pacific Male Artist for his debut album ‘Young Love'.

The audience was treated to dynamic live performances by both established and rising Pacific music stars including Tapanui Motions, Malcolm Lakatani, Smashproof, Illegal Musik, Te Vaka and a Dawn Raid showcase.

Now the Juice TV Awards were a whole different ordeal. An exclusive invitation-only event, the Juice Awards saw a range of NZ artists celebrated. The public voted for the winners with 60,000 votes cast across the 11 music video categories. I had the honour of joining the Juice crew down in the wine cellar-turned-interview room. All artists who came down for their 15 seconds of fame were super stoked in their win; because being voted for by the public (instead of a ‘distinguished' panel of judges) is a big deal.

And the winners were:

Dickies Best Hip Hop Video: J Williams feat Scribe - You Got Me

McKenna Break Thru Video: Ivy lies - Addicted

Real Groove Best Electronic Video: Kids of 88 - Just A Little

The Quadrant Best Group Video: Midnight Youth - Cavalry

Guitar Hero Best Rock Video: Shotgun Alley - Look At Me Now

Music Works Best Metal Video: In Dread Response - Cannons At Dawn

Sunday News Best Solo Video: Dane Rumble - Cruel

Juice TV Best Indie Video: Crescendo Mafia - I Told You So

Steinlager Pure Best Roots Video: Fat Freddy's Drop - Pull The Catch

Samsung Innovation Award: J Williams feat Scribe - You Got Me

Grabaseat Video of the Year: Dukes - Vampires

A special shout out to Best Metal Video winners, In Dread Response - they tripped down the stairs, thoroughly intoxicated and then vocalist, Sean O'Kane - Connolly, ripped his pants off and passed out on the floor. After being revived by an anxious cameraman, Sean got to his feet and slurred in an incomprehensible way, "wait, did we win the award?" When an affirmative response was given he pumped his fist and yelled "fuck yeah." Then he passed out again.

It was an epic and star-studded night out, and was a great way to farewell the 10th anniversary of New Zealand music month.
