Richard Julian - Sunday Morning in Saturday's Shoes: music review

Listening to this album is like reading a really good book of short stories - each song sets up its own mood and creates its own world, musically and lyrically. The 11 song compilation was recorded in Los Angeles under the guidance of legendary producer, Mitchell Froom, best known for his work with Los Lobos, Crowded House, Elvis Costello, Suzanne Vega, Bonnie Raitt and Ron Sexsmith to name but a few. The production is a bare-knuckled, stripped down affair which features live in-studio performances of Richard with his New York rhythm section. Julian’s sparkling guitar work shines through-out this album, as does his wit, but what really sets him apart from the crowd is the ease with which this folk-rocker melds sounds. Well worth a second and third listen.
