StatelessStateless
****
From the industrial North of England come Stateless with a reflective and gently powerful set. Arctic Monkeys producer Jim Abbiss get his paws on the boards and fuses a myriad of styles into cohesion. A lone guest is welcomed in the form of Lateef The Truthspeaker (Latyrx, Fatboy Slim), whose flawless emceeing ability is almost lost in the mix. He makes for a haunting and beneficial addition as opposed to an exploitive cameo.
In terms of mood, the LP is one dimensional; deep, dark and somewhat woeful. It is emotive, sung in unique fashion by Chris James and coupled with taut production values, consistently original drums and the odd tidy scratch it’ll give the Coldplays and Zero 7s of the world a run for their money.
