Georgian Luger Dies after Horrifying Crash at Olympics

Tragedy has struck the Winter Olympics. Coming around one of the bends, his luge flung him into the air, sending him into mid-air somersaults and ultimately, into a steel pillar on the other side.

I can't imagine the 2010 Vancouver Games starting off on a more sour note than it has with this horrific, heart-wrenching, accident that occurred to a Georgian Luger, Nodar Kumaritsashvili, during a trial run.

This is really very sad and shocking! They should really look into athletes safety first and not just going overboard for the thrill factor..!

Tragic but preventable, the additions to the bob sled track came too late

Surely the building could have been designed so that steel poles do not surround the entire track! It's like how there are so many power poles on corners of roads and people crash into them and die! stupid..

I wish people wouldn't keep on showing that poor man's death all over the internet. I caught it on the news and while not bloody was pretty horrible all the same. Shouldn't people have some respect in death? Just because we can do somthing with technology, it doesn't mean we should go ahead and do it.

I also think someone needs to really examine the cause of his death. The authorities seemed to turn around and spout, "human error" before he was even cold. If there was no issue with the slide, why change it to make it shorter for the men?

Such a tragic, tragic turn of events - made me realise just how incredibly dangerous luging is. Fun to watch but I would never, ever have the guts to actually give it a go...all that speed and ice is a recipe for disaster!!

One hell of a gutsy sport but one hell of a heinous way to die :(
All I could think was that a car crash at 100km/hr hurts... a lot... so flying down at 145km/hr with no car to protect you just doesn't bear thinking about. Kerrist that is one hell of a painful way to die.

I could have sworn it said George Lucas' shot with luger!
    I feel cheated

Not really a freak accident. These guys are the best at what they do. It was entirely forseeable for someone to leave the track at that point. Proper risk management analysis would have identified that an unpadded steel beam would prove to be lethal.
